March 2009If you would like to receive the SVA TU newsleter in your email, please send an email to Tom Tinkle. Greetings, all. I hope everyone is enjoying our wacky spring weather. Three weeks ago I was casting dry flies and wet-wading in RMNP, and the next two weekends layering up to fish in cold, rain and snow. Keeps things interesting. I love springtime in the Rockies. On to business… Greetings, all. Hope everyone is doing well and has a chance to get some fishing in. Signs of spring are beginning to show up around here and I for one am thrilled. Winter fishing is a lot of fun but I can't wait to fish wearing less than 6 layers of clothing. Rainbows seem to be staging up for their annual party so now is a good time to get a few before the spawn is on. Water around the area is beginning to open up and offer more opportunities for us to get out and enjoy Colorado. On to business… The March general meeting features Joel King of Kingfisher Flies in Ft. Collins. A native of Colorado, he has been guiding the Alpine Rockies and the Front Range, and tying flies professionally since 1992. Joel's fly designs have been featured in Northwest Fly Fishing and Southwest Fly Fishing magazines. His presentation this month will be on methods and flies for fishing the Poudre River and North Park lakes. If you missed his appearance at the Fly Fishing show in January, now would be a good time to learn from a pro. Joel will also be our featured tyer that night, creating some of the bugs that he uses on these waters. I look forward to getting an edge on those pigs in the Delaneys. As always there will be a cash bar, fly tying, bucket raffle, slide show and chapter talk. Please join us Thursday, March 19th, 6:30pm at the VFW on South Main. Our goal of accomplishing stream restoration on the St. Vrain was advanced when Chuck Howard recently had a meeting with Ben Swingle, DOW Biologist, Northeast District. Chuck reports that the DOW's plans for the St. Vrain corridor and our goals compliment each other well, and that the opportunity for matching funds, grants and other sources of funding were a very real possibility to help us develop a great trout fishery on the river. This is something to be quite excited about, and we'll keep everyone posted as we get more details. The next chapter fishing trip is slated for the weekend of March 28-29, on the Colorado River near Hot Sulfur Springs. This chunk of river has been real good to me this winter and I'm sure it'll be great for this trip. Email Mark Rayman to sign up. Please let him know if you'll be staying Saturday night so that we can secure rooms for everyone. Should be a great time. Dick Shinton's Kids Learn to Flyfish classes are going great, with twelve participants. He would like volunteers for the next two tying sessions on Mar 14th and 28th, so please contact Dick and lend a hand. Classes are held from 8:30-Noon at the Community Room at the Longmont Justice Center at 3rd and Kimbark. An early heads-up for our Kid's Fishing Day, June 6th at Isaac Walton park in Longmont. This is one of our cornerstone events every year, and a whole lot of fun. Please come out and help us teach these kids to catch some fish and appreciate the sport as we do. Once again, please contact Mark Rayman to sign up. Check out the web-site, www.svatu.org. William Brower has been working diligently to keep the site current and add new features, and the site looks better every visit. Send more pictures! They look great and help show what our chapter is all about. Our fundraiser this year is scheduled for May 9th, and will be a party in celebration of the past and future accomplishments of SVATU. This from coordinator Mark Kyner:
We aim to throw a little party for all you good folks out there in our TU family. We are going to have free Burgers, Brats, and all the fixin's. Cash bar provided by the VFW will be available. We are gonna have some great raffles and some silent auction items. Trips, gear, flies, and otherwise. We are hoping to line up some good live music. You, your family, and your friends are all invited. We want to have a good night with all the fisherpersons in town. So please, mark your calendars and we hope to see you there. If you have any items or service you'd like to donate to the chapter for this event, please get a hold of Mark Kyner or call 303-678-9921. More details will be coming your way soon. Thank you, Mark. I'm still taking names for the fishing partner email group. If you would like to be notified when someone in the group posts a trip or available fishing day, or would like to let others know when you are free to go, drop a line to stvraintu@gmail.com and I'll get you in the group. Could be a good way to fish new places with new faces every now and then. Thanks, everyone. Hope to see you on the 19th. T. SVATU Board:
