Hello everyone. That was a great blast of nice weather we just had,
and I hope everybody had a chance to get out and take advantage of
it, but it looks like the cold stuff is upon us again. It's snowing
now so maybe it's time to head to the hills for a little skiing.
Or fishing. Every year I look forward to the cold weather fishing
trips; scary roads, frozen gear and all. There's something about the
quiet solitude and beautiful scenery that makes a little discomfort
worthwhile. There's also the extreme challenge of tying up a three
fly rig in sub-freezing temperatures with tiny bugs, tiny tippets
and numb digits. Fantastic!
Our guest for November's program will be Al Ritt. Al grew up in Michigan
and in the early '80's moved to California where he began tying flies and
fly fishing exclusively. These early flies were tested in northern California
on such world renowned waters as Hat Creek, Fall River, Pit River, Sacramento
River and others. In 1989 he moved to the northern front range of Colorado,
where he currently resides and fishes with wife and business partner Diana.
You might run into Al fishing almost anywhere in Colorado or Wyoming, but
he spends the majority of his time on the water in and around Rocky Mountain
National Park, Red Feather, Colorado River and Sylvan Dale Ranch just outside
Loveland. Not coincidentally, Al also is a guide on the same water he fishes.
Al will be joined by our very own Mark Rayman, guru, guide, fly-tyer and
fly-fisher extraordinaire, for a discussion of winter fishing on some of
our local tail-waters. They will cover bugs, tactics and conditions on many
streams including the Big Thompson, St. Vrain, Colorado, Frying Pan and the
South Platte at Elevenmile Canyon and the Dream-Stream. My fingers are
getting numb just thinking about it. Please come join us Thursday,
November 19th, 6:30pm at the VFW Hall on South Main Street in Longmont.
Dick Shinton is starting to put together next year's Kids Learn to Fish
program series. This has been an excellent venue for kids 8-13 years old
to learn the art of fly fishing, including fly-tying, stream entomology,
casting, etiquette and more. Space is available for the classes beginning
in late January, dates TBA. Dick would appreciate any donations of fly-tying
materials, tools or fishing gear you could spare for the program. Please
contact him at rashinton@gmail.com
with donations or to get your kids signed up.
James Hooven has been working to get a Facebook page up for the chapter.
This will be a great way for members to keep up with chapter business,
check for upcoming events, communicate with one another, share stories
and pictures and do all that other cool Facebook stuff. It's in it's
infancy right now but content will be added continuously.
Click here to be directed to the page.
The February general meeting will be the very popular chili and member
presentation night. Several of our members will cook up pots of red and
green chili for us all to share and others will regale us with Power
Point wizardry. This is your chance to show off your latest fishing
exploits, awesome photos and great stories. If you would like to do a
short (5-15 minute) presentation at the meeting, or want to dazzle the
group with your culinary prowess, please talk to Mark or Barbara, or
email them at mflyfish@msn.com.
The chapter has been donated a guided fishing trip (details coming soon)
that we would like to auction soon. We would like to try a live email
auction next month. Any comments would be appreciated, at
stvraintu@gmail.com.
The current term of the Board of Directors is coming to a close next month,
so we should have some new faces on the board in January. Many thanks to all
the outgoing, remaining and future board members for your time and efforts
keeping our chapter strong and relevant. As always, we encourage you to
speak with a board member if you're interested in helping out the chapter
by joining the board.
Help us make the website great! We'd love to get pictures from everybody to
put up on the site. Just visit the site at
svatu web site, go to the
"Your Pictures" page and click the link for William at the bottom. Show the
world your best stuff.
Show your chapter pride! SVATU caps are available at the meetings for the
donation of a lousy 12 bucks. Thanks again for helping to preserve and
improve our local fish habitats. -T
