Kids Learn to Fly Fish Program
This popular program, co-sponsored by the St. Vrain Anglers Chapter of Trout Unlimited and the Laughing Grizzly. The sessions start on February 27, 2010 . There will be six Saturday morning sessions from 8:00am - 12:00pm at the Longmont Police Dept, 3rd and Kimbarkas follows:
- Session 1 (February 27, 2010) - Introduction to the class and sessions. Fly tying- basic entomology
- Session 2 (March 13, 2010) - Fly Tying and basic entomology
- Session 3 (March 27, 2010) - Fly Tying and basic entomology
- Session 4 (April 10, 2010) - Trout watershed conservation; the TU message; Colorado trout/salmonid and related species; cool bug video.
- Session 5 (April 24, 2010) - Stream sampling on the St Vrain for insect and other life; type identification.
- Session 6 (May 8, 2010) - Casting lesson and fishing on local ponds (too unpredictable for trout- kids need the success of catching a fish)
Boys and girls between ages 8 and 13 as of the first class session are eligible. While the class is free, there is a $30 refundable deposit required for participation, though this can be waived in cases of financial hardship by talking to Dick Shinton. All supplies and materials will be provided
There is a limit of 12 participants. In past years, some kids have signed up only to miss the majority of the sessions because of conflicting activities. Because participation is limited, and applications always outstrip availability, if your child signs up, we expect him or her to attend every session, barring unforeseen circumstances, of course. A lot of work goes into preparation for the sessions, and a lot of volunteers make time to help; it's unfair to them and to the kids who were turned away. Contact Dick Shinton by February 20.
Volunteer Opportunities
Adult or experienced kid volunteers are needed for each session. Volunteeers for the three tying sessions need not be expert tyers; we tie very basic patterns. No special expertise is required for any other session; you only need to be interested in helping kids to learn our wonderful avocation. Contact Dick Shinton via email Dick Shinton.
